Costs & Budget · United Kingdom

Cost of studying in United Kingdom for Indian students

Planning a budget for studying in United Kingdom can feel overwhelming — tuition, living costs, visa fees, health insurance and pre-departure expenses all need to be accounted for. With proper planning, an international degree from United Kingdom can be one of the most rewarding investments for Indian students, opening up global career opportunities and post-study work pathways.

Tuition fees vary widely by university tier and program. Use the tabbed breakdown on the right to compare bachelor’s, master’s, MBA, medicine and PhD costs in United Kingdom — with notes on each program type and typical fee ranges in local currency.

Monthly living costs vary sharply by city. Refer to the city-by-city breakdown for rent, food, transport and total monthly budgets in United Kingdom’s top student cities. Choose your destination based on both academic fit and cost of living to plan accommodation, food and lifestyle accurately.

For your United Kingdom student visa application, you’ll need to show proof of funds covering tuition plus living costs for the first year of your program. Combine the funds-proof figure with one-time pre-departure costs (visa fee, English test, flights and initial setup) to build a realistic total budget.

Healthcare (NHS)

After paying the IHS upfront, you get free GP visits, hospital treatment and most prescriptions through the National Health Service throughout your stay.

Weather & Seasons

Mild summers (15-25°C), crisp autumns, snowy winters in Scotland and the North, mild winters in the South. Pack layers and a good waterproof — rain is part of the charm.

Funding & Scholarships · United Kingdom

Generous scholarships for Indian students in United Kingdom

Studying in United Kingdom opens up thousands of scholarship opportunities for Indian students every year, ranging from fully-funded flagship government awards to partial tuition waivers from individual universities. Together they can reduce your effective study cost by 30–100% — serious applicants stack 2–3 awards each cycle.

Use the tabbed widget on the right to compare fully-funded scholarships, partial awards and university-specific schemes available for Indian students applying to United Kingdom. Each row shows the award amount, eligibility level, what it covers and the application window.

FAQs

Your United Kingdom questions, answered

Everything Indian students typically ask before flying to United Kingdom — from costs and visas to scholarships and post-study work rights.

How much does it cost to study in the UK as an Indian student?
Total cost ranges from ₹25 lakh (affordable cities, 1-year master's) to ₹1 crore+ (London, MBA at top schools). Tuition is £18K–£42K and living costs are £900–£2,200/month depending on city.
Is IELTS mandatory for UK student visa?
Most UK universities require an English proficiency test. UKVI IELTS Academic is the safest choice — a minimum of 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) is accepted by most Russell Group universities. PTE Academic and Duolingo are also accepted by select universities.
Can I work part-time while studying in the UK?
Yes — international students on a Tier 4 / Student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations at the National Living Wage of £12.21/hr (2026 rate).
How long is the Graduate Route post-study work visa?
Currently 2 years for bachelor's and master's graduates and 3 years for PhDs. From January 2027 the duration for bachelor's/master's reduces to 18 months, while PhD remains at 3 years.
What is the September vs January intake difference?
September is the main intake — every course, every university and every scholarship is available. January is a smaller intake with around 40% of programs and lower competition. May is a niche intake mostly for foundation programs.
Do I need to show funds proof for the UK student visa?
Yes. You must show 28 consecutive days of bank balance covering tuition for the first year plus living costs of £1,483/month (London) or £1,136/month (rest of UK), capped at 9 months.
Can my spouse and children come with me?
