How to win a scholarship

Six things every winning candidate gets right. Our counsellors can guide you through each one.

1

Start 12-18 months early

Most deadlines fall 6-9 months before the academic year. Timeline first, then test scores, then drafts.

2

Hit the test score bar

Top scholarships expect IELTS 7.5+, TOEFL 100+, or competitive GRE/GMAT. Target the top of the band, not the minimum.

3

Write a sharp SOP

One clear story arc — past, problem, plan. Tie your goals to what the program and country uniquely offer.

4

Get specific recommenders

Choose people who can speak to specific projects, not generic praise. Brief them on the award you're applying for.

5

Show leadership and impact

Most prestigious awards weigh community impact and leadership as much as grades. Document concrete outcomes.

6

Apply to 4-6, not just 1

Diversify across full-rides, university merit and need-based. Reuse and tailor essays — never start from scratch.

Scholarship questions, answered

Can I apply for a scholarship before getting university admission?
For most government scholarships (Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD), you can apply in parallel with — or even before — your university applications. Many awards require admission before disbursement, but the application timelines run together. Our counsellors map both timelines side-by-side for you.
Do I need work experience for scholarships?
Some awards (Chevening — 2 years minimum) require work experience. Others (Gates Cambridge, Knight-Hennessy) don't require any. Many UG-level awards are based on academic performance alone. We match you to scholarships that fit your current profile.
What's the realistic chance of getting a fully funded scholarship?
Top awards like Chevening accept around 2-3% of applicants, but country-specific and university merit awards can have acceptance rates of 10-30%. Applying to 4-6 well-fitted scholarships dramatically improves your odds. We help you build a balanced shortlist.
Can scholarships be combined?
Sometimes yes. University merit awards can often be stacked with departmental grants or external scholarships. Government awards like Chevening typically can't be combined with other full funding. We check the specific terms for each award you're shortlisted for.
Do you help with the application itself, or just guidance?
Both. Our scholarship counselling covers shortlist building, eligibility checks, essay/SOP review, recommendation letter strategy and mock interviews. We work with you all the way to submission.
